Virtual theater and psychedelic worlds between order and chaos

Sensual, playful approaches and new perspectives on worlds not normally perceived in everyday life.

From February 20 to March 29, immerse yourself in immersive video works, colorful paintings, and virtual reality experiences every day from the moment the theater opens. A journey of discovery for the curious!

Oneironautica IV

The transformation of things. VR experience by Mirevi.

In the fourth version of the VR project Oneironautica, the stage of the virtual theater opens once again—a space between waking and floating, where the lightness and gentleness of dreams gather. Inspired by Zhuangzi's butterfly dream, the installation explores the shimmering boundary where identity evaporates and is reborn. Who is dreaming whom here? And what form does a beautiful dream take when it is passed on?

Oneironautica IV invites visitors to contribute their own dream images: memories, sensations, and friendly visions interweave with the traces of their predecessors. Words become forms, forms become verses, verses become a growing poetic chain that is carried on from visit to visit.

Falsey Plus

Video work

We follow a character on a mysterious journey through a rapidly expanding alien world. Based on Jess Johnson's drawings, animated and directed by Simon Ward, the work combines hard geometries with organic life and transports us into a psychedelic world between order and chaos. The soundtrack by Andrew Clarke reinforces this tension.

Terminus

Virtual reality experience in five parts

A world developed over many years from drawings by Jess Johnson, realized by Simon Ward and developer Kenny Smith, accompanied by soundtracks by Andrew Clarke.

The journey takes us through five zones — from Fleshold Crossing to Known Unknown and Scumm Engine to the Tower of Gog & Magog and the psychedelic Tumblewych.

At the end, we realize that reality is not fixed, but malleable and diverse.

Jess Johnson

Jess Johnson's hand-drawn compositions create mysterious, alien worlds in which holographic networks of grids, architectural fragments, humanoid clones, and messianic figures are interwoven.

Since the first Theaterinsel RAUSCH 1, her works have shaped the appearance of the Theater an der Ruhr. Now we are showing further facets of the work of this artist, who works in New Zealand and the USA.
