In a series of press conferences, Ein Volksbürger recounts the career of a political rising star – a fictional populist Minister-President in a German Free State. His high-handed actions and the resulting threat to democracy ultimately force a showdown: the first-ever invocation of Article 37 of the Basic Law, which, as ‘federal coercion’, provides for drastic measures.
In the 2026 election year, Ein Volksbürger represents far more than a theatrical thought experiment. This political farce by Nico and the Navigators exemplifies how a charismatic seducer attempts to undermine the political system. It is based on research by the Verfassungsblog team led by Maximilian Steinbeis.
The world premiere, starring Fabian Hinrichs in the lead role, took place in 2024 at the Haus der Bundespressekonferenz and was nominated for the Theatertreffen and the Friedrich Luft Prize in 2025.
